5 electromagnetic flow meter you must know

When it comes to cost benefits, electromagnetic flow meter. End of story. Well, not really. Of course, these meters have specific needs in certain processes, as most do. But if everything fits, then you get a cheaper meter compared to other principles, with decent accuracy most of the time.

Most electromagnetic flow meter perform similarly. They usually vary in the features more than anywhere else. On one hand, those features can help keep your process reliable. On the other, the cost of the meter increases, and in some cases the investment won’t pan out for you.

Now vendors may disagree because “industry 4.0!” and “IIoT!” and all the other latest buzzwords. However, the reality in the field begs to differ, as we still have more analog applications – even with smart devices – than digital. But better to improve critical parts than try to change it all because it won’t happen overnight.

So the following list, in no order, here’s some of the most popular electromagnetic flow meter on the market. It’ll give you only a small picture of your options, but if you don’t have any idea about vendors, then it could help.

Rosemount 8750W for utility water applications

Emerson has a wide range of magmeters, each of them with specific points to fit in certain industries or applications. I picked the Rosemount 8750W for utility water just to make it easier. It resembles the other models, so if you know those, then you have some familiarity with its interface.

You can choose from three types of liners with three types of material, and you need to make sure your choices work with your process requirements. It also has a long list of output options, diagnostics, and meter verification.

Proline Promag  P 200

Unlike the Rosemount 8750W, the Proline Promag P 200 works for various applications and industries, like chemicals or other situations with corrosive liquids and high product temps. The 200 line all uses the same two-wire transmitters, so you can have a electromagnetic flow meter, Coriolis, or level radar using a similar interface.

Plus, this loop-powered meter can help save money by using protocols like HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus (FF) and PROFIBUS.  Last but not least, it comes with Heartbeat Technology and other advanced features.

SITRANS F M MAG 6000 and F M MG 3100

Here I combined a transmitter and one of the sensors you can use with it. The SITRANS F M MAG 6000 has a funky name but good features and transparent integration using different protocols.

You can pair it with a broad range of flow sensors, each for a specific type of application. I chose the SITRANS F M MG 3100 because you can deploy it in different segments and applications and it offers different liners and sizes.

The transmitter itself also has many input, output, and communication options, like the DeviceNet protocol.

The ADMAG AXF can also fit into many applications and segments. By the way, I liked the new device page on Yokogawa’s website. It looks great! Well done, Yokogawa.

On the upside, you have a range of protocols, such as HART, FF and PROFIBUS, and options for electrode materials. On the downside, it has only one type of liner. So maybe it’ll fit in most of the applications, but they could have more options, right?

Beyond that, you can choose wafer or flange process connections, which is nice because some vendors only have flange options.

The IFC 100 signal converter will integrate with the OPTIFLUX and WATERFLUX flow sensors. It brings a lot of output and protocol options to create a seamless integration in your control system.

It also has a bunch of diagnostics to help you avoid unscheduled downtime – conductivity changes, temperature, detection of deposits and more.

The OPTIFLUX 4000 sensor will deploy in tons of applications and industries, such as mining, wastewater, and chemical. You can also choose different liners for compatibility with your product.
