I wish I knew what flow profiles are!

Let’s get back to the basics here. Measuring flow depends on several factors in the installation and process conditions. Change any of these and you can have two different flow profiles. Inlet and outlet runs reduce this effect, and accessories can help too, such as conditioning orifice plates.

Okay, the first flow profile is the turbulent flow. That means an increase of the molecular movement of your fluid creates random motions. The slower particles speed up, and high-velocity particles slow down. This image should give you an idea of how turbulent flow works.

On the other hand, we have laminar flow, the opposite of turbulent flow, right? Yes, in this case, the particles move more regularly, creating straight lines. This should give you a visual on laminar flow.
