Which type of temperature transmitter should I use?

A temperature transmitter is a device that reads a temperature sensor’s signal, then converts it into an analog or digital signal. If you have to install a sensor far from your control room, then you increase the risk for distortion and interference. Therefore you want a transmitter to amplify and transmit the signal to the control room.

On the market, you’ll find three general types of temperature transmitters. Let’s go through them now.

DIN rail mount

When you have a short distance between the sensor and control room, low signal interference/distortion, or high vessel temps, then you’ll probably use a DIN rail mount or panel mount transmitter. These transmitters have an input voltage range of 8 to 35 volts, and you’ll find them used widely because of their low cost. While this type has been around the longest, extensive cabling can make it less accurate.

Field mount

This type of transmitter connects directly to the process, usually installed near the sensor for a stronger signal. Therefore this type provides safe signal transmission with an amplified signal. You can get them with a dual chamber to protect the housing from humidity and moisture. Field housings typically come in die-cast aluminum or stainless steel, but you can easily install a display if you need one.

Head mount

These transmitters install directly on the terminal heads of temperature assemblies. So this type provides maximum safety for your signal. Plus, this type requires less wiring, less space, and less money compared to field mounts. However, extreme vibrations can cause extra maintenance, and fluctuations in the ambient temperature can influence accuracy.
