When you have a question about process automation that needs a short answer, let us know with #WishIknew and @Visaya! We’ll reply with a #WishIknew post. It’ll give a quick explanation, then some related articles, videos, or reviews if you want to know more.

I wish I knew how to configure DeviceNet devices!

DeviceNet configuration will depend on many details, like the type of control system you have.  Each system has its own quirks and steps to follow. However, we can give you an overview to get you pointed in the right direction.

You can check out another #WishIknew here at Visaya with an explanation of the DeviceNet network, but let me summarize a relevant point. As a trunkline-dropline network, it may have up to 64 nodes with media access control identifiers or MAC IDs.

When you buy a new DeviceNet product, it should have a default MAC ID. Set it up, then set the network where you plan to install it. You’ll also have other data such as the class identifier, instance identifier and an attribute identifier.

Afterward, go to the control system. Here the procedure will depend on your model, but you need to add the DeviceNET Scanner. Then the software will browse the network, find all devices connected to the driver, and so on.

Knowing about the MAC IDs should get you to change the address before installing so you can avoid duplicate addresses on the network. So don’t say we didn’t warn you! But yeah hope that it on DeviceNet configuration, hope it helped!
