I wish I knew where we use magnetic flow meters!
For a new flow application, you have a bunch of principles and meters to pick from. Most processes can fit more than one principle, and your options will offer similar accuracy and performance.
A magnetic flow meter will often cost less than other choices, but you have to have a conductive product – usually a minimum of 5 micro-Siemens per centimeter – which usually limits you to liquids. You also need to factor in liner compatibility and straight runs before and after the device.
The good old differential pressure device is a volumetric option that won’t cost much. However, it needs mechanical structure and constant maintenance. In clean liquids, you can apply ultrasonic or vortex flow meters. And if you need high accuracy, you should probably go with a Coriolis meter.
As you can see, you have many options besides magnetic flow meters, but for conductive liquids, magnetic flow meters often make a great choice.
