#WishIknew: What’s a manometer and how do I use it?

When you have a question about process automation that needs a short answer, let us know with #WishIknew and @Visaya! We’ll reply with a #WishIknew post. It’ll give a quick explanation, then some related articles, videos, or reviews if you want to know more.

Wish I knew what a manometer is and how to use it!

When we have to measure pressure, we have several ways to do it. However, “we” in this case can mean field technicians or your average citizen. You can find examples all over your daily life for measuring pressure.

Have you ever had to fill a car or bike tire?
Or have you ever had a medical checkup? For these purposes, you need to check pressure, air for your tires and blood for you. We can’t afford to have too much or too little pressure in any of these situations.

So we have many ways to measure pressure, both digitally and “analogically.” Yes, you’ll find digital pressure indicators outside of industrial processes too.

Thus, we can say that a manometer is simply a tool to measure pressure in closed systems. Manometers generally come in two types, liquid and elastic.

Here we have some models based on these two types:

  • U-tube manometer
  • Differential U-tube manometer
  • Inverted U-tube manometer
  • Inclined manometer
  • Bourdon pressure gauge
  • Aneroid gauges

Also, they measure different types of pressure, absolute, gauge, and differential. If you want to know more about those, then read our article on that here. You must know the right pressure to measure in order to pick the right manometer for your application.

And this video will tell you more about the working principle of a manometer:
