#WishIknew What is pressure measurement and calibration?

When you have a question about process automation that needs a short answer, let us know with #WishIknew and #Visaya! We’ll reply with a #WishIknew post. It’ll give a quick explanation, then some related articles, videos, or reviews if you want to know more.

I wish I knew what pressure measurement and calibration are!

Okay, we have two different questions here, but we’ll start with pressure measurement. In fact, let’s back up. Before you learn what pressure measurement is, you need to know what pressure is!

Pressure is a force exerted in an area, and how you measure it will depend on what kind of pressure you want to measure. We have three kinds of pressure measurement and different devices to measure each.

Absolute pressure, gauge pressure, and differential pressure each use a different reference. Absolute uses a vacuum, gauge uses the atmosphere, and differential measures the pressure between two points. You can learn more in this article here.

Now, let’s talk about calibration! Calibration is the procedure of comparing a reference with a known error margin against a device under test. If the device doesn’t match the reference, then you can adjust it to match – or at least come close. To learn more, you can watch this video on calibration, precision, and accuracy.

This video can tell you more about pressure measurement:

The definitive guide to pressure transmitters – Today, you’ll learn all the things about pressure transmitters! We put together some of our best content into a handy guide that either a beginner or an experienced engineer can use.

What’s the difference between static and dynamic pressure? Static pressure describes the force exerted on a fluid at rest. Imagine a bucket of water sitting on the ground with a rubber duck in it. As long as everything stays still, static pressure exists in that bucket.
