Once upon a time, to measure mass flow using a pressure transmitter, you had to combine elements – differential pressure transmitter, static pressure transmitter, temperature sensor, local indicator, and a computer to collect and calculate everything.

You still can find this sort of solution on the market, and depending on your needs it may make a good solution. On the downside, it costs more than a multivariable pressure transmitter because it needs more structure, devices, and time to set up.

A multivariable pressure transmitter puts all of that in a single device. So you have built-in differential and static sensors, and you can connect a temperature sensor as well. The transmitter will measure mass flow accurately while requiring less structure and time to set up and run.

You can get a bunch of data from these multivariable pressure transmitter, such as temperature, mass flow, energy flow, and static pressure. Of course, you can find other devices that give the same or better performance. For instance, in a steam measurement, you can use a vortex flow meter instead. It just depends on what you need.
