Comparison: BD Sensors XMP i vs Schneider-Foxboro IAP10
Okay, I think we are done with pressure so far! We can jump on a different topic, but before that let’s compare two new devices left. Today, we have a traditional player in the instrumentation world, the guys from FOXBORO a company from Schneider-Electric have the IAP10 as their representant today.On the other side, the dudes from BD Sensors brought the XMP i to be reviewed today. Let’s find out the pros and cons of each device, and combine the most relevant information about them here. Are you ready? Let’s go dive into the features pool!

In general, the XMP i has a simple design following the standard design of the majority of the pressure transmitters on the market. Its color is good, but it is too square to me. I mean, the design will not change the point that device is robust and its implementation is very flexible. However, its hygienic version has a different design and the device is more compact than the standard version.
On the Foxboro side, they kept a standard device, and honestly, sometimes the device looks like an 80’s instrument. However, they have an outstanding reputation in the automation world, and the robustness and lifetime of their sensor are indisputable. The IAP10 is the absolute version, and you can have the IGP10 to gauge measurement, the device has an optional display where you can read the process variable and also set up the instrument. Beyond that, you also have a hygienic version, but in that case, the device is similar than the standard version.
The XMP i has an optional LCD display 32.5 x 22.5 mm, and on the screen is possible to read the process information, and the device also has a bar graph where you can easily find out the percentage of the measuring range the device is measuring. Additionally, you can set up this device in the field through the 3 push buttons on display, two arrows to scroll up and down, and OK-button.
Different from the XMP i the IAP10 has no bar graph on display, a simple feature that can help to a straightforward interpretation of the measuring information. Its local configuration is through two push buttons, next and enter. The local setup is not complicated but can be painful, and a setup using handheld can save time during a verification or setup process.
For you have access to the push buttons is necessary to open the cover, but to save time you have an optional external zero pushbutton. How efficient it is, I don’t know! The handheld sounds like a better idea for both devices.
Both devices will provide you a broad range of absolute and gauge measuring range. The BD sensor the model will keep the same for both types of measurement, but the Foxboro device will have two different names, IAP10 to absolute pressure and IGP10 to gauge pressure.
Giving more information about the BD sensors, you can have a pressure measurement from 0 to 400 mbar or 0 to 600bar. When you are mounting the order code of the XMP i, then you have the input to choose. For instance, you can select a measuring range from 0 to 20 bar, 0 to 100 bar or -1 to 10 bar.
Furthermore, the XMP i can be installed using different process connection, you have mechanical connections on the order code, and for sure you will find one to fit in your request. For instance, I can mention the Flange DIN, ANSI, thread, clamp and more.
On the other side, the IAP and IGP10 will have different ranges to the hygienic version. If you are scaling out a pressure transmitter to standard applications, then you select span limits 1 to 30, 100 to 3000, 2000 to 6000 psi and others. The range from 2000 to 6000 psi is available only to the gauge transmitter. Now, the hygienic version will have span limits, such as 1 to 30, 10 to 300 psi and others.
Talking about process connection, the Foxboro device also has a long list of different options allowing you to install the device easily in your process.
Performance and Integration
These devices are now high-end options on the market and based on that they have good accuracy. On the BD Sensors side, the device has an accuracy according to IEC 60770 +-o.1 percent of the full-scale output (FSO). I can say that 0.1 percent is enough for many different applications, and the XMP i can be a good cost-benefit option.
On the downside, the device lacks different output and field protocol. It is only available with 4+20mA+HART communication. The device with 4+20mA can be deployed in various application. However, the areas of application mentioned on the website require more options, such as FOUNDATION FIELDBUS and PROFIBUS PA.
The FOXBORO device has different accuracy if you are scaling out a pressure transmitter to the hyginiec application, the technical manual mention a reference accuracy of +-0.20 percent of the span, and the standard option has +-0.05 percent. Further, you have equations to calculate the accuracy of square root output, small span, calibration frequency, etc.
On the integration side, the IAP10 has more options than its competitor. You can select this pressure device to communicate using 4-20mA, 1-5Vdc, HART, FoxCom™, or FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocols. Even though you have many protocols here, on the downside, there is no PROFIBUS PA.
Both devices have primary diagnostic and configuration; you won’t find advanced diagnostic or fancy features here. Next topic!
Information and documentation
The BD Sensors is not a bad website, on the desktop, you can find the devices quickly and its documents, however, they don’t have too many devices then it’s easier than Schneider website. On the downside, there is no mobile experience, the website is not responsive, and it’s painful to navigate using your smartphone or tablet. Additionally, the documentation is terrible; the operation manual requires an update real quick!
The Foxboro/Schneider website brings a good user experience on smartphones and tablet, but finding what you want is complicated. You’re better off using Google than the site’s search engine. In the plus column, the documentation looks right, so you’ll find your answers once you see your document.
The IAP10/IGP10 from FOXBORO offers more possibility to integration and also a better accuracy. However, BD Sensors XMP i has a reasonable accuracy, and its hygienic version looks better than Foxboro. The most relevant thing is the performance of your process information, local support, spare part and then reasonable price.
