Product Review: Cerabar PMP21 for absolute and gauge pressure

Pressure is one of the most common measurements in the industry, but you don’t need a fancy device to measure it. You’ll find many small and simple pressure transmitters to do this job without any problems. Today, let’s have a look at the Cerabar PMP21 from Endress+Hauser. We’ll dig into its specs and see its pros and cons, so stick around!

Whatcha got there?

The Cerabar PMP21 doesn’t look like much, but it has an excellent price and flexible measuring range to get your attention. This plug-and-play device doesn’t come with a local display, but it doesn’t need one for its configuration.

If you want a local display, then you can add one, like the PHX20. But the PMP21 has a fixed measuring range and unit that you define in the ordering stage. Still, the optional display will let you do the commissioning.

What can it do?

The Cerabar PMP21 can measure absolute or gauge pressure in liquids and gases. Moreover, you can install it in tanks and pipes to reliably measure pressure in critical points.

It has a measuring range from 450 mbar up to 40 bar supporting an overpressure of 600 bar. It uses a piezo-resistive sensor to measure absolute or gauge pressure. If you want to learn more about pressure sensors, then take a peek at our definitive guide.

The PMP21 can hold up to temperatures from -40 °C to 100 °C (-40 to 212 °F) and installs with thread connections such as G1/4, G1/2, and MNPT1/4. Endress+Hauser also gives it a reference accuracy of 0.3 percent, with a long-term stability of 0.2 percent of its upper range limit per year.

Why should I care?

The Cerabar PMP21 has enough features to cover a range of segments. With the configuration done at the factory, most of the time you can just plug it in and go. But if you want a display and local setup, then you can still do that with an optional display.

Unfortunately, you can’t repair this device, only replace it if you have a problem. But you can integrate it into your control system using an analog signal, and it has several electrical connections to help you during installation.

If you want a simple absolute/gauge pressure transmitter for a basic process, the Cerabar PMP21 has a good range and price. We have similar devices on the right for your comparison shopping.
