Hey, gang! Yes, we’re back again! After my TOP 5 post on Coriolis meters last week, y’all said on Linkedin that I should’ve included the KROHNE OPTIMASS 6400 on my list. So today we’ll see if I agree with you! If I do, then maybe we’ll put up a new TOP 5 list for Coriolis meters.

Before we begin, though, I should make a disclaimer-type of statement here. These product reviews and comparisons examine only the features of each product, not their performance in the field. You’ll have to discuss the devices in the comments with people who’ve purchased and used them to find out how well they do on site.

Keep in mind also that what works for someone else may not work as well for you. You have to scale out your candidates using your own process information to decide what fits your application. We want to help you find and narrow down your candidates, not tell you what to buy.

With that out of the way, take a seat, have a read, and draw your conclusions about the 6400!

Whatcha got there?

KROHNE stands in the market as a traditional vendor in flow measurement. Built on years of experience, the 6400 offers the user high performance in liquid and gas applications.

On the other hand, the transmitter interface allows easy and intuitive setup, and the display provides elegant color and easy visualisation of the process variables. Operators can chill because they have all the process data laid out before them like a banquet. Delicious!

The 6400 comes with only a few protocols – HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS DP/PA, Modbus, and analog output and binary input. KROHNE focused on the food and beverage industry as well as the machinery sector for the 6400. In these segments, Ethernet protocol has rapidly expanded, but if you want an EtherNet-IP, then the 6400 falls short there. And for PROFINET, you can either wait or buy a converter.

On the plus side, the OPTIMASS 6400 comes in stainless steel, Hastelloy and duplex to provide chemical compatibility with most products. It also offers flow measurement up to 1500 tons per hour. The sensor design is fairly compact compared to other sensors, which saves space in the installation.

What can it do?

Solve your application problem, right? It gives you a bunch of measurement possibilities like density, temperature, concentration of fluid and gas, and more.

Also, its measurement accuracy puts it among the top players in the market. According to KROHNE, you’ll get +-0.10 percent in liquids and +-0.05 percent if you choose the advanced version. It hits +-0.35 percent for gas and +-1 kilogram per cubic meter for density. If you have an on-site calibration done, then the accuracy jumps to +-0.2. Nice, huh?

Why should I care?

While not the hottest product on the market, the 6400 brings good features. For example, as soon as you install it, it’ll run a test automatically, and the test covers 90 percent of the parameters. This gets you off to a great start, because if you have a problem the flow meter will tell you with status messages, diagnostics, and input/output data.

I wish I could’ve found more in-depth information about this feature, but that’s all I got.

It also has redundant data storage. If you run into issues, then you can go to the field and swap out the electronic for a new one, and the old configuration will transfer to the new. This function will save you a bucket of time!

If you have entrained gas conditions, the OPTIMASS 6400 ensures continuous measurement, one of the highlights of this device. You also have a list of approvals, including custody transfer and safety. Excellent.

In general, the 6400 is a decent option to consider. You get the experience of KROHNE and plenty of possibilities with this flow meter.
