So, calibrating field transmitters… The short answer is that yes, calibration is always important. However, you don’t need to precisely calibrate your level transmitter in the field because sometimes it has to calibrate in a different measurement range. If you can’t generate the process values in the field or workshop, then you have to set up the transmitter with an acceptable range to use a field calibrator like a DRUCK.

First, remove the transmitter from the process. Make sure you clean the sensor where it makes contact with the process before you start the calibration. Next, find the range of your transmitter and the range of your field calibrator. Between the two, try to pick a range that covers most of the transmitter range.

While you calibrate, make sure the transmitter offers the accuracy, linearity, and hysteresis needed by the process and set by the vendor. If necessary, adjust the offset trim and the slope trim of the transmitter.

Remember that you may need to adjust the zero when you return the transmitter to the process.
