What are the HART advantages?
We need to decide which type of field network protocol to use in a new plant. Can we set up a HART network instead of a PB or FF network? What diagnostics I will lose?.
Expert’s answer: HART advantages
A HART device offers the same intelligent device management (IDM) that you can find in an FF or other digital networks. The HART provides great configuration, diagnostics, calibration and other features. Now, with HART your system will need the 4-20 mA to control your current loops. This is the main disadvantage when we compare HART advantages to other protocols.
The Fieldbus Foundation, for example, offers digital communication from the primary device to the final control element. You also get IDM on all devices instead of just the HART device. Basically, you need to compare digital communication to 4-20mA rather than to HART.
We have RIA 15 that uses HART in our shop. To know more about this, you can read here.
