With a 4-20mA setup, the HART protocol connects with a handheld or laptop to configure, diagnose, or calibrate devices. Although the HART doesn’t need communication with the control system, you can have a digital connection through a HART input/output (IO).
Now, a multidrop installation connects devices to a control system, allowing field communication with an IO. In fact, a multidrop can connect up to 15 devices on the same pair of cables. You also don’t have to deal with 4-20mA variation anymore, only the HART communication.
