For starters, you don’t actually need a PROFIBUS profile, but your system should have many. PROFIBUS uses profiles to define parameters for certain devices and their applications. When you work on a PROFIBUS network, the profiles support functionality in each field device, whether simple or sophisticated.

To give you an example with a simple device, the profile for a pressure transmitter will define details like the signal outputs. Even a complex device like a driver will have a profile to define its uses and limits.

The profiles also support consistency on a PROFIBUS and PROFINET networks. Thus, profiles guarantee interoperability across the network. So you don’t need one. You need several, and PROFIBUS provides!
