PROFINET is one of the most common network communication protocols today. If you are already using it and you would like to add a new flow meter to your plant, it makes sense to choose one that comes with PROFINET already integrated or is at least easier to integrate with an existing system.

Wondering what exactly PROFINET is? You can read about it here.

PROFINET flow meters

The two safest PROFINET flow meter options on the market today are the Endress + Hauser Proline PROMASS 100 E and the PROMASS 300/500 E. Both of these devices use the same Ethernet protocol and integrate very well with PROFINET.

Alternatively, you can opt for a different kind of flow meter that doesn’t come with PROFINET integration and combine it with a PROFINET gateway. This will, however, require more work. System integration will be the same for all PROFINET devices, such as the PROMASS flow meter, so you won’t spend too much time to integrate the device into your control system. Once you have the GSD file, then you will see all information coming from the flow meter into the control system.

An important point to check is if the device is certified by the PI association to make sure that your device has seamless integration.
