Expert’s answer: VIVACE VTT10-F
Great question! You can use different temperature sensor types with the VIVACE VTT10-F. Thermocouples are the most common. You can also use RTDs made out of either Platinum (Pt100, 200, 500, 1000) or Copper (Cu50, 100). Each sensor has also a different connection.
Take a closer look at the VTT10-F
Before we proceed to the connections themselves, I would like to introduce some more features of the VTT10-F. This temperature transmitter can be installed directly onto your sensor. You can either install it through a bracket on a 2″ pipe or fix it on a wall or panel. The VTT10-F can support temperatures ranging from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. It is also IP67 protected. This means that if you install it properly (and remember to tighten the screws!!) you shouldn’t have any problems with water.
At this point, let’s quickly talk about certifications. On both the website and the technical manual VIVACE states that the housing is suitable for hazardous areas. Keep in mind, however, the explosion proof and intrinsically safe certifications are still pending.
The VTT10-F supports analog, HART, and Profibus PA protocols. There is the option for local configuration through a Zero Span system with a magnetic tool. The display is five digits Bargraph LCD. There is the option to rotate the display 90° so you can install it in any orientation you want. Not too shabby and makes reading easier!
Ok, now that we know more about the device itself, let’s come back to your connection. In contrast to Pt100s, thermocouples have a positive and negative terminal. You can identify them by the colors. For those of you in the USA, the wiring is setup in compliance with ANSI standards. The ANSI standards state that positive wires should be white and negative wires be red.
Now that we have the wires identified, let’s move along to the device. If you want to access the terminal block of the VTT10-F you can simply open up the device’s rear cover. Once you have access, you will see the 4 sensor terminals numbered from 1 to 4. Now, you should connect the positive end (white wire) to terminal 2 and the negative end (red wire) to terminal 3. Once you connect the thermocouple wires you should connect the terminals 3, 4, and 1 in series. If you are having trouble visualizing this in your head don’t worry! You can just follow the diagram below.
