Level Product Review

Product Review: ABB LST300

Before we get to the LST300, let’s chat about alternative tech! Who’s excited about swapping out their ultrasonic level transmitters with the new hotness?

Yeah, we now have new ways to measure level for the same price. But they’re not as popular as good old ultrasonics, either with customers or vendors. Oh well. Back to the tried and true!

The LST 300 is a compact ultrasonic level transmitter from ABB that fits in many segments and processes out there. So let’s dive into the features and see how it can fit into your new application.

Disclaimer: This product review examines only features, not performance. If you’ve used this device, feel free to share your experience in the comments. This content serves the purpose of providing information if you want a new device.

Whatcha got there?

The LST 300 has a design similar to a lot of devices in the ABB portfolio. As I’ve said before, this helps you because you’ll feel at ease with the interface. It also saves time and money for the vendor to reuse an old housing design.

You can order the ABB LST300 with or without a local display. It has two display options, one with a standard button setup and the other with a through-the-glass (TTG) feature. That means you can set it up without opening the cover. Both offer graphics for an assortment of data, including advanced diagnostics.

The push-button navigation looks simple, scroll up and down and two function buttons. So I’m sure you’ll learn how to handle it quickly. And keep in mind that you can opt to skip the display. However, if you do, then you’ll have to set up with a HART handheld.

And by the numbers – it has a length of 136 mm, width of 100 mm and height of 266 mm. You may peruse the details in the technical documents if you so desire. In the meantime, let us carry on.

What can it do?

The ABB  LST300 can use the time-of-flight (ToF) principle to read product levels with mechanical waves, like any other ultrasonic! If you want to know more about ToF, we have a little article that will help.

Anyway, it can measure between -40 and 85 degrees Celsius. The C06 sensor has a range of 0.25 to 6 meters, and the C10 sensor can measure from 0.35 to 10 meters.

If you want to know where you can use this device, then the datasheet will give you some examples from a variety of segments. And if you want to know literally where you can use it, the LST300 has a beam angle that can fit into some narrow spaces indeed. The C06 sensor has a beam angle of seven degrees and the C10 sensor five. Nice, huh?

This loop-powered device operates from 16 to 42 volts and communicates through analog or HART protocol. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have more options for seamless integration in other scenarios.

It has an accuracy of +-2 mm, well within the market standard. Not spectacular, no, but what do you expect from an entry-level device? Come on!

Why should I care?

First off, the LST300 can save you money in a bunch of segments and applications. Second off, it’s easy to install. Third off, it comes with advanced diagnostics.

The display can show you graphic echoes which you can analyze and filter for false echoes. ABB also wants you to know that its GAP technology will continuously monitor the measuring and the data to ensure the best performance. Besides that, the LST300 will let you choose your output from level, volume, and flow.

Plus, if you have harsh process conditions, you can pick different housing materials. It comes with aluminum alloy as standard for the metal parts and PVDF for the plastic bits. Last but not least, you can get a handful of certifications and approvals. We have the entire list on Visaya’s device page.

Conclusion

The ABB LST300 offers plenty of oomph for your application, with useful features, accuracy, and measuring range. Still, it could use better output and digital protocols. If you want to read more about it, then visit our device page. But remember, you have new technologies out there to compare against. Take a look around and see which will work best for you.
