Product Review: EJX510B Wireless Absolute Pressure Transmitter

I took a look over our product reviews recently and realized that we haven’t reviewed any new pressure transmitters in a bit. Sure, we have a bunch of pressure devices reviewed already, but let’s do another! How about Yokogawa’s EJX510B?

Speaking of which, I was hanging out in Visaya’s co-working space when I met some new dudes who sell IoT and Industry 4.0 solutions. We talked about integration, if IoT is a buzzword or not, things like that. And what, you say, does that have to do with today’s review?

Well, seamless integration has become an influential factor in the industry. Today’s device has one of the preferred ways for integrating smart devices, the wireless protocol.

So let’s go over the features for this device and the pros and cons regarding its application and wireless protocol. Stick with me and we’ll find out together!

Whatcha got there?

The EJX510B from Yokogawa measures absolute pressure wirelessly. Its twin, the EJX530B can measure gauge pressure, if you need that instead. And if you still don’t know the difference between these type of pressures, then you can read our post on absolute, gauge and differential pressure.

Anyway, the EJX510B follows the same design characteristic of Yokogawa’s main portfolio, with a similar housing, display, and other stuff. Although it doesn’t have an internal antenna as standard – bit of a drawback, since other brands have hopped on that bandwagon.

You can configure it using a local infrared port, and after that, you can access the setting, diagnostics, and more wirelessly. You can use different tools to set it up based on device description (DD) or device type manager (DTM). We also have an article on those here.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of infrared communication. I consider it slow and outdated. However, you can try it if you like. Finally, you have a local display where you can see the process variable, diagnostics, and a bar graph for the measuring range.

What can it do?

The EJX510B measures absolute pressure and the EJX530B measures gauge. You can use either of these devices in various parts of your process for monitoring and in some cases for control as well. And the wireless protocol makes installation and integration into the control system easy.

You have good options regarding measuring ranges, too. Yokogawa offers different measurement spans, such as 8 to 200 kilopascals or 0.04 to 2 megapascals. Plus either device will work with a single crystal silicon resonant sensor.

As for chemical compatibility of wetted parts, you can pick 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C-276, and more.  However, although you don’t need electrical connections for this wireless device, you do still need process connections. Here you have good standard options such as 1/2 NPT female, 1/2 NPT male, and more.

It also boasts a reference accuracy, based on the calibrated span, of +-0.04 percent of the span. The technical manual has more info, but this device offers excellent accuracy. We’re not talking about low-budget products here.

Moreover, it has lots of approvals and certifications for hazardous and harsh areas. And you can choose an integrated or external antenna and even a standard antenna or height gain, if allowed in your country.

Why should I care?

The EJX510B and EJX530B offer outstanding accuracy and seamless integration, using ISA 100.11a, for your pressure application. You should check it out if you have this sort of wireless protocol in your plant. If not, then you’ll need to review other options to make sure you pick the right one for your application.

The device can be set up to provide data every half a second to 60 minutes. Keep in mind, though, that if you set it up to report faster, it’ll eat up your battery. Do the calculations or check with the vendor about the lifetime prediction for your specific needs.

Conclusion

Yokogawa brings years of experience in the automation world to the EJX510B and EJX530B, making them outstanding devices on the market. The wireless communication bring easy integration and remote access, two big pluses in today’s plant.
