In maintenance, many tools become crucial to your work. For instance, if you want to check diagnostics on a specific field device, then you need a field communicator. This tool can also save configurations and assist with setups, often better than the local display.
If you work in a plant, you’ve probably seen or even lived the scenario where an operator says that the flow meter isn’t working properly and the field engineer needs to check it. And how do you do that? Depending on the process, you could compare two flow meters. In that case, a portable ultrasonic flow meter would serve you well. You can also use it for temporary flow measurement.
Today, we’ll review just such a device, the FLUXUS F601 from Flexim! Let’s dive into the features so you can understand where to deploy it.

Whatcha got there?
First off, Flexim brings solid experience in flow measurement. The compact FLUXUS F601 can measure liquids and comes with several bits and bobs to cover different scenarios.
Flexim kept it simple on this one. So you won’t see an innovative design, fancy display or things like that here. At 8.9 by 8.39 by 2.32 inches and 4.6 pounds, it isn’t tiny, but it doesn’t make the word “portable” feel outrageous, either.
Setup happens through the local keypad, where you have a bunch of numbers, arrows, and other things. It doesn’t look too hard, but you should read through the menu tree and decide for yourself. It also has a dainty display and a backlight – which sounds basic, but some devices don’t have either. Just saying.
As a portable device, you expect to get some way to carry it around the plant, right? Well, it does indeed have a transport case that will hold it and all its goodies. Furthermore, Flexim designed it for a number of scenarios. It might even work in harsh environments, although I didn’t find any data on that.
You should also know that Flexim designed it to work on all kinds of pipes – so the claim goes. If you’ve met a pipe it doesn’t work on, then drop us a line!
What can it do?
Yep, it can measure flow. But you can also get up to four temperature inputs or current inputs. We’ll go over those later.
It can measure a good range of pipe sizes, making it a flexible choice to cover all your pipes. The F601 has a diameter range from a quarter inch to 36 feet and a standard accuracy of +-1 percent. And if you do the field calibration, then you can improve the accuracy to +-0.5 percent.
Of course, you may need more than one transducer or sensor for all your pipes, but that’s common in this sort of device. Anyway, each sensor should have its pipe wall thickness range on the datasheet. And each transducer will have a specific frequency, like FSG at 0.2 megahertz (MHz) or FSK at 0.5 MHz. You can use the sensors between -40 and 400 degrees Celsius, but you need to see the temperature range of each sensor. There are standard versions and extended-range versions, such as the FSM, FSP, and FSQ.
Why should I care?
Because Flexim gives you four options to choose from! Check them out:
- Standard version: This model will give you two current outputs and two binary outputs.
- Energy version: Here, you get two Pt100/Pt1000 inputs, two current outputs, and two binary outputs.
- Double energy version: Guess what? Yup, this one doubles the last, with four Pt100/Pt1000 inputs, two current outputs, and two binary outputs.
- Multifunctional version: This version brings two Pt100/Pt1000 inputs, two current inputs, four current outputs, and two binary outputs.
So what do the energy versions do, and where can you use them? Well, you can check the energy performance of parts of your process, such as heat exchangers and compressed air networks.
Last but not least, this device has an internal battery with 14 hours of juice. Not bad at all.
