Product Review: Rosemount 2051
More pressure, less money! Yes, we’re still reviewing budget pressure devices. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the fancy gadgets too, but for now, we are hitting it off with the Rosemount 2051.
I worked a lot with the 2051 at Emerson. It’s a simple pressure transmitter that can cover many applications. Let’s dive into the features and options to see how you can fit it in a new application. This review will focus on the differential pressure features; we’ll leave the other possibilities for another post!

Whatcha got there?
The Rosemount 2051 is simpler in many aspects than models such as the 3051. First, the local display comes with options that differ depending on the field protocol. For the HART and PROFIBUS PA versions, you can have the standard two-line LCD display without a local setup or with the local operator interface (LOI). This version has two simple push buttons to navigate the menu.
If you pick the FOUNDATION Fieldbus version, then you can get the two-line LCD display. But if your device has the built-in wireless, then you can pick the three-line, seven-digit LCD display. It’s still compact and straightforward, just a little more modern than the others. You know which I’d pick.
I’d also pick something other than the local setup. I hope a handheld would make the setup more comfortable and faster than the LOI. The documentation has a menu tree to guide you in either method.
What can it do?
This differential pressure transmitter can measure pressure, flow, and level, including using a dry and/or wet leg.
In the measuring range, you get plenty of options when scaling out this device up to 2000 pounds per square inch (psi). For instance, you can select a range from -25 to 25 millimeters in water (mmH2O) or -2000 to 2000 psi; you can see the range for each version on the order form.
In the manual, you can see the standard accuracy and how to calculate it depending on the span. For instance, the version 2051C with Range 1 (-25 to 25 mmH2O) has +- 0.10 percent of span, and Range 2 (-250 to 250 mmH2O) offers +-0.065 percent of span.
The Rosemount 2051 can also handle a broad range of temperatures, limited only by flange or fill fluid. For example, the 2051C with a coplanar flange can work from -40 to 121 degrees Celsius, and with a traditional flange from -40 to 149 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, you have different materials for flanges, diaphragms, and housings; surely something will match your requirements! For instance, the 2051C has flanges in stainless steel, Cast C-26, and others. Its diaphragm can be 316L stainless steel, Alloy C-276 or tantalum, and the housing material comes in aluminum, engineered polymer, and more.
Why should I care?
Because it can communicate with your control system using FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS PA, wirelessHART, or analog+HART! Pretty good for a low-end device, believe me!
It also has certifications and approvals for harsh and hazardous environments. The Rosemount 2051 can scale out with flameproof, explosion-proof, and intrinsic safety certs, and the manual has a string of standards for various countries.
No advanced diagnostics, but it has the basic diagnostics commonly found in such devices. It also has nice accessories, depending on the version you pick. And orifice plates, Annubars, and other things come with these devices.
In general, the Rosemount brand brings high expectations for quality and technology. Even though the Rosemount 2051 is a low-end device, you have a range of possibilities. Scale it out, price it, and check the local support in your region!
