Rosemount 3051S Coplanar – Differential pressure transmitter.
Pressure is one of the essential process variables, and you have a huge list of vendors on the market! How do you know which one has the solution for your application? Ask us, duh. Seriously, though, we can help! We aim to weigh the pros and cons of various brands so you can choose a transmitter to scale out for your process. Today, we’ll take a look at Rosemount 3051S.
As one of the most relevant companies in the automation market, Emerson Automation Solutions has practically moved in and propped its feet on Visaya’s coffee table. We cannot escape, so we surrender.
Please welcome our new robot – I mean, the Rosemount 3051S from Emerson! You’ve heard about it by now, so let’s see how this transmitter supports different applications and segments.
Take a seat, grab a chocolate, have a read, and draw your conclusions!
Full disclosure: This product review examines only features, not performance. If you’ve used this device, feel free to share your experience in the comments.
Whatcha got there?
A heavy-duty player in pressure measurement! The device itself looks like any other Rosemount transmitter, no fancy designs here.
The 3051S comes in variants with the same name, such as high static, multivariable, electronic remote sensor, and others. But here we’ll focus on the differential pressure (DP) transmitter.
As with most Rosemount transmitters, you can’t set up locally. It only has a zero and span adjustment, so if you want to navigate the configuration, then you need a field communicator.
The 3051S has the SuperModule Platform – good name, by the way – built in. The sensor is 100 percent hermetically sealed and guarantees readability and repeatable performance. Although it promises 15 years of stability and limited warranty, who’ll remember that after 5 years?
What can it do?
You won’t believe it, but the 3051S can do all the things a normal DP transmitter can do! I’m serious! You can use it for flow, level, and DP. Sounds great, huh?
It offers excellent performance, with classic accuracy up to 0.035 percent of span or ultra accuracy up to 0.025 percent of span. And the ultra for flow has up to 0.04 percent of reading accuracy. Emerson always markets its ultra accuracy, and it always delivers. Well done, Emerson.
If you want a seal system, you got it. The 3051S has integrated manifold, primary element for flow application, and seal system solutions. It also has a huge measurement range to fit almost any process. However, that can vary from model to model, such as -62.16 to 62.16 millibars, -20.68 to 20.68, and so on. The manual will have all those details as well as a list of the various diaphragm materials available.
The transmitter has certifications for various countries and process requirements. Moreover, it comes with a long list for process connections, classifications, and external display options. Want more? Here it comes!
Why should I care?
The 3051S has several options to allow smooth integration into your control systems, like analog, HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, and WirelessHART. If you want a PROFIBUS PA, you need to change to the 3051 without the S, although you’ll change more than the title. Make sure you compare the specs before buying.
Furthermore, the 3051S comes in different housing styles. For wireless, the transmitter has different antennas to improve range over a standard antenna. This feature can reduce or eliminate the need for repeaters on your network.
But wait, there’s more! The 3051S and 3051 both have power advisory diagnostic technology. In a traditional installation, you have components in the loop power like the junction box, cables, and other things. These components can deteriorate or become damaged by water and other issues. The power advisory diagnostics can detect changes in voltage and resistance, avoiding unscheduled downtime, failures, and other problems.
Generally pressure transmitters don’t offer much innovation, but the 3051S certainly stands out in the pack.
It makes for a strong choice in many processes, so you should definitely check it out.
