Product Review: Sitron EL series conductive level switches

Before we start chatting about the Sitron EL series, let’s get on the right level. Okay, okay, I’ll stop – for now. As one of the trickier process variables to measure correctly, level always brings up questions, especially for troubleshooting.

Back when I used to visit customers, I got tons of questions about level measurement, most of them are related to the “new technologies.” Most people didn’t know much about the new working principles or didn’t have the proper tools to handle them.

These kinds of problems build barriers against new tech. In 90 percent of the cases, the problem resided with the users, their lack of knowledge or tools, not the devices. Anyway, if you want to read more about level, then check out our articles covering the pros and cons of each method.

And now, back to the show! Today, we have the EL series from Sitron, a set of conductive level switches combined with relay level controllers. Let’s dive into the features. Please stick with me till the end!

Disclaimer: This product review examines only features, not performance. If you’ve used this device, feel free to share your experience in the comments. This content serves the purpose of providing information if you want a new device.

Whatcha got there?

If you want advanced diagnostics or fancy features, you should find another model or brand. Wait! Before you run off, check this one out first! Even though the EL is a basic device, you have a pretty flexible range of possibilities here.

No, it’s not fancy -it doesn’t even have a local display. But then it doesn’t really need one for its simple setup. It’s practically a plug and play.

The sensor connects to the relay controller, where you’ll find said simple setup. Depending on the relay controller, you can get sensitivity adjustment only or add delay adjustment.

No secrets in this one, but you still need to scale out properly and check the installation to make sure it’ll fit your process.

What can it do?

This level switch from Sitron operates in conductive products, and you can get up to six level points. It works with the electrical resistance change between the sensor and a reference, either a probe or the tank wall. When you have a conductive product between the sensor and the reference, the sensor will detect the change of electrical resistance.

It has many types of conductive probe, so I’m sure you can find one for you. The sensor works from -10 to 150 degrees Celsius and up to 20 bar.

Furthermore, it offers a selection of housing materials, such as nylon, aluminum, and stainless steel. It also has a handful of process connections, such as BSP, FLANGE ANSI 140, and NPT. Plus you can choose rods and cables – fixed rod, PVC cable, silicon cable, and more.

As you can see, it has plenty of possibilities and can deploy quickly in a new application. Even though it doesn’t have a fancy configuration and seamless integration, you still can do a bunch of things.

Why should I care?

Because it costs less than a lot of other similar products on the market. And how many readers here can say, “Bah, money is no object!” with confidence? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Apart from the sensor options, you need to choose the relay controller too. I had hoped for more options to integrate it into the control system, but it has really simple outputs. So this limitation may interfere with your integration.

On the upside, you have different possibilities in the options, such as minimum and maximum level, amplifier control, and two differential level. And the wetted part comes in 316 stainless steel, with an option for a coating against aggressive product. It doesn’t have approval for hazardous areas, but it does have IP65 class protection.

Conclusion

If you have a conductive product and you want a simple level switch, then maybe the EL series from SITRON can help. You can read more in our device directory, and you can find similar options on the right side of this page.

I don’t have a video for this one, so have some original-flavor Star Wars:
