Applications Smar LD400

Flow Level Pressure Q&A

I have a milk storage tank on which I would like to install the Smar LD400. Is it compatible with sanitary requirements?

Expert Answer: Applications Smar LD400

Yes, actually! The Smar LD400 has a special model for sanitary purposes, the LD400s. This transmitter is specially designed for food and other applications where there is the need for a sanitary connection. It has a threaded or tri-clamp connection, which allows quick and easy maintenance and cleaning. There is also the possibility of a flush connection. The flush connection allows deposit removal without disconnecting the seal. On top of that, all the connections are compliant with the 3A standard for food grade applications.

In fact, you can use the LD400 for many other applications. The possibilities are endless! Ok, not really, I just love that expression. Anyway, Smar also brings to the table their remote seal SR301. It is designed for chemical and thermal isolation. You have the option to assemble SR301 together with the LD400. Then it can be used in applications like corrosive process fluid, suspended solids, viscous process fluid, process fluids that may freeze or solidify and bubble systems.

Since the Smar LD400 is a differential pressure transmitter you can also use it as a flow meter. In this case, you will have to also get a primary element such as an orifice plate or venturi tube. If you have any questions on how to set it up we have an article that can teach you.

√Don’t Forget

Another important thing to consider when measuring flow is that you will have to change the transfer function of your device from linear to square root. Because as we know, level measurement is directly proportional to the differential pressure. Conversely, flow measurement depends on the square root of the differential pressure. Therefore, if you forget to change it on your device you will get an incorrect reading.

Calculations for level measurement

Let’s talk about calculations. It is also important to note that you have to set your Lower Reference Value (LRV) and Upper Reference Value (URV) when configuring your device to measure level. Different setups require different LRV and URV. If you have also questions about it, we have articles explaining this process for both open and closed tanks.
