Please help me configure our new wireless Raptor! I have no idea how to start working with it.

Hey, sounds like a new species! And where can you find one? At Emerson, of course! Emerson’s Rosemount Raptor is a system with a bunch of devices: radar, pressure, temperature, communication, inventory management, death lasers whoops, not that one. When you say wireless Raptor, you mean the THUM adapter with the 1420 gateway, I’m sure. Anyhow, you’ve come to the right place to configure a Rosemount Raptor!

Now, the wireless config usually follows the same steps as most of your devices, has standard network protocol, can use different brands, yadda yadda. But! You have two configs to make the bits chat with each other: the Network ID and the Join Key.

So the Network ID is the … ID … of the network. Yeah. Anyway, it has to be unique. All authenticated wireless gizmos with the same ID can talk to the same network and gateway. “Authenticated” is the keyword here.

The Join Key is a 128-bit security code for authenticating your gizmos on the network. Now, everyone can use the same Join Key on a network, or each gizmo may have a unique Join Key. Either way, these configs keep creepers from creeping on your network through your gizmos.

So. Howzit go? Here we go!

Gateway steps
  1. Go to the gateway and connect using an Ethernet cable (yeah, I know, just deal).
  2. Find the maintenance port (it usually has the IP 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.2.10).
  3. Set up in the same IP range (you should know how this bit works).
  4. Connect to the gateway using the web browser (put the gateway IP here).
  5. Put in the username and password (yup, user: admin, password: default).
  6. Set up the Network ID and Join Key (almost there!).
  7. Your gateway is ready to find your gizmos (tada!).
Gizmo steps
      1. Figure out what setup you need with the THUM (see pretty picture).

      2. Connect the handheld to access the THUM config (deedledeedledee).
      3. Put in the default HART polling address, 63 (if that doesn’t work I got nothin’).
      4. Set up the THUM using the same Network ID and Join Key you set up on the gateway (if you haven’t yet, why are you jumping ahead? Go back!).
      5. If you can’t use the handheld, check the Device Description files (the HART knows best).
      6. After the setup, the THUM will find the gateway and you can finish remotely (yay!).

That should do it- that’s how you configure a Rosemount Raptor!
