You’re absolutely right. Endress+Hauser, among other big companies, has invested in expanding the ways we can collect data from our field devices. The fall of the handheld age has begun, eroded by the evolution of wireless connectivity – Bluetooth, near-field communication (NFC), and others.
Unfortunately, vendors don’t agree on what should take over. Bluetooth and wifi seem to share the lead in the race. Both technologies have their uses, but wifi generally runs faster than Bluetooth. However, Bluetooth 5 may change the game. We have an article and video on this newest iteration, if you want to check those out.
Most new transmitters from Endress+Hauser have various ways to set up and check diagnostics, like wireless, Ethernet cable, or field protocol. And the PROMASS Q 300 has an integrated web server, so you can use your phone, tablet, or laptop to set it up using the web browser.
Or if you have a handheld, then you can set up the traditional way, using local tools or a plant asset management (PAM) system and the right files to read the field data. Last but not least, you can use the local display. The local method takes a little more work, but do it once and you should be able to do it again later without the manual.
