Product Review: WIKA CPG1500 digital pressure gauge

Pressure! Pushing down on me
Pressing down on you…

Big hand for rock legends David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, folks. (If you don’t know them, then ask Google to teach you about the music you love. They helped create it.) We mentioned this tune in a video we made about pressure and fries, if you want to check that out.

In case you’ve just tuned in, we dedicated this month to talking about pressure and the flexibility of its technology. Today we have a product review on an outstanding digital pressure gauge from WIKA. This company has mixed old solutions with a new approach to make your life easier.

Without further delay, say hello to the CPG1500! Let’s check its features out to see if the device can really support you in your process. Ready? You know our deal by now, right?

Take a seat, grab a cachaça, have a read, and draw your conclusions!

Whatcha got there?

A mix of old and new tech, the CPG1500 has a cool display and local configuration. It offers a flexible range of applications, with gauge, absolute, and vacuum versions. That means you can use it in different process measurements and it can follow different process requirements with high accuracy and reliability.

Its digital display presents data very nicely, giving you an easy bar graph to understand each part of the range the device measures. It also gives you pressure and temperature values. You can set it up through the push buttons on the front of the transmitter, and you can adjust the display backlight too.

The installation is as simple as any other manometer and digital gauge transmitter out there. While it comes with all kinds of process connections, it only has stainless steel 316 for the wetted parts, which limits the products this device can handle.

What can it do?

You can maybe use the CPG1500 to measure pressure, right? Of course, you can install it to measure gauge, absolute, or vacuum pressure. You have a huge list of measurement ranges to choose from, like 0 to 100 bar with a gauge pressure sensor, or 0 to 40 bar for an absolute pressure sensor. You can find all the options in the technical manual.

Furthermore, the CPG1500 offers decent accuracy for most common applications. It gives you up to 0.1 percent of full scale or a special version offering up to 0.05 percent of full scale. The transmitter can also withstand operating temps from -10 to 50 degrees Celsius.

And you have a huge list of units to choose from for pressure and level measurement. Last but not least, it has good resolution, from 4 to 5 1/2 digits on the display, and this function is adjustable, giving you more flexibility.

Why should I care?

The CPG1500 offers amazing digital communication. First of all, it powers up with three AA alkaline batteries. Yup, you can go to the supermarket to buy batteries for your pressure transmitter. How cool is that?

Yes, it could have a better battery life estimate, as 2000 to 2500 hours only comes out to around 100 days. Compared with other solutions, that falls way short, as most competitors offer at least three years. On the other hand, most need special batteries that cost a lot more than the AAs on the CPG1500. You do the math.

It uses Bluetooth, which the company calls WIKA-Wireless. Nowadays we don’t have much patience for proprietary tech. On the plus side, you only have to use it to set up the device and it works very well for that. It would only need a short step for an open protocol to integrate the device with your control system, offering external access as well. Just sayin’.

Setup through the display or app is so simple that you don’t even need  the manual. Furthermore, you can create a history; the device has an internal memory that lets you record up to one million values. You need a WIKA-Cal to read the recorded file through the Bluetooth, though.

The myWIKA app and software Wika-CAL have simple, easy-to-navigate designs. However, the app asks a ton of questions first, so grab a snack or a cup of coffee before you start.

So what do you think? It can get you there from here, right? If you’re still on the fence, we have plenty more for you to look through to help you decide.
