I wish I knew what vibration analysis is!

Vibration analysis (VA) represents a key factor of a condition monitoring program that aims to reduce costs related to downtime, maintenance, and repairs by catching equipment faults and failure rates. This predictive maintenance helps you keep your process in good shape by telling you when parts need service.  

Before we talk about analysis, let’s go over the types of vibration that occur with actuating forces.

Natural or free vibration occurs even after the original disturbance ceases to exist, like when you hit a tuning fork and let it ring until it stops. The system vibrates at a natural frequency, then gradually becomes still.

Forced vibration happens to a system when a time-varying disturbance occurs from an external force, like what you feel on an uneven road. The vibrations generated have the same frequency as that of the applied force.

Damped vibration gradually dissipates the oscillating energy by friction, eddy, or other resistances. The vibrations reduce or change in frequency or amplitude, and the system comes back to equilibrium.
